Gaming regulators in Puerto Rico have indicated a plan to launch sports betting in the U.S. territory by April, following a few final steps to prepare the market.

The new head of the gaming commission in Puerto Rico says he hopes to launch the U.S. territory’s sports betting market by April, to coincide with the start of the 2021 Major League Baseball season.

According to a report from SBC Americas, Orlando Rivera Carrión, the new executive director of the Gaming Commission of Puerto Rico, said a few steps need to be completed before sports betting is fully ready for launch. Those include establishing a budget to finalize sports betting regulations, and finalizing amendments to the sports betting law signed by former Governor Wanda Vázquez Garced in the last days of her term.

“The Sports Betting Division has no budget,” We need to provide one in order to finish the regulation,” Carrión told SBC. “We need to provide one in order to finish the regulation.”

The territory’s sports betting law, originated as Senate Bill 1534, authorized wagering on sports and esports in the country, with the mission of prompting “new industries and businesses to create jobs” and “new sources of revenue to sustain government programs and essential services.”
