Casino del Mar, located at the Hotel La Concha Resort in Puerto Rico, has debuted a new VIP lounge called the High Limit Pit. The exclusive gaming room offers blackjack, roulette and other table games, all of which accept high-value bets. Ten more people were hired to work in the room.
Puerto Rico marked the 75th anniversary of legal gaming on August 7. According to the San Juan Weekly Journal, the Puerto Rico Gaming Commission said the industry has contributed $1.4 billion to the economy in the last 10 years.
Jaime Rivera Emmanuelli, interim director of the commission, said the original casino legislation, enacted in 1948, was designed to promote tourism to the U.S. territory.
“This objective is constantly met if we consider that the island has a growing catalog of tourist offers, to which remote sports games and betting have recently been added,” said Emmanuelli in a statement.
“With the approval of Act No. 221, the legal framework was established on the island to safeguard transparency in gambling, through regulation. The legal framework made possible the creation of a formal industry, supervised by the government, with a view to ensuring tourists and locals the greatest guarantees of purity of the games. On the other hand, the regulation allows them to make important contributions to the treasury,” he added.
Puerto Rico is now home to 18 casinos. Gaming revenues help to support the central government, the tourism industry and education.
