Quebec Prepares to Block Online Gambling Sites

Reports say Quebec is preparing to block online gambling sites operating in the province under consumer protection provisions in the provincial budget adopted in April. Finance Minister Carlos Leitao (l.) calls it a consumer protection measure.

Quebec is preparing to implement a plan to block online gambling sites under a law passed in April.

The law was part of the provincial budget and would have ISP providers block the sites in the province if they are not approved and authorized by Loto-Québec, the corporation that operates lotteries and casinos in Quebec.

Finance Minister of Quebec Carlos Leitao said the province is moving forward on implementing the budget, including the amendment to the local Consumer Protection Act that would block unauthorized gambling websites. Operators that fail to comply are going to be fined with $100,000 or even $200,000 according to a report in World Casino Directory.
