Quebec to Cut Number of VLTs

The government of Quebec has announced its intention to cut the number of lottery VLTs from 12,000 to 10,000 to fight “compulsive gambling.” The new regulations also aim to move them out of poorer neighborhoods.

The Canadian province of Quebec will soon begin cutting the number of video lottery terminals (VLTs), and removing them from bars, all in an effort to fight “compulsive gambling,” with the goal of reducing the number from 12,000 to 10,000 machines by 2019.

Canada.- Loto-Québec is the government agency responsible for the machines. Carlos Leitao, the Quebec finance minister, said in a statement: “Our government is determined to have responsible gaming on offer, fighting against compulsive gambling and preventing the outbreak of sites used for illegal gambling.”

The machines will also be removed from low income areas and transitioned from taverns to areas that promote group entertainment, such as pool halls and bowling alleys.
