R.I. Bill Would Guarantee Money for Host Towns

Rhode Island Rep. John G. Edwards (l.) has introduced a bill to guarantee that the towns of Lincoln and Tiverton won’t lose annual payments, even if even if their casinos shut down again. Covid shutdowns hurt both towns.

R.I. Bill Would Guarantee Money for Host Towns

A bill authored by Rhode Island state Rep. John G. Edwards would guarantee that the casino host towns of Tiverton and Lincoln wouldn’t lose their $3 million annual payments, even if the casinos they host have to close down again.

Last year, both towns lost money because the two Bally casinos closed due to Covid restrictions.

Bill 2021-H 6355 would guarantee $3 million annually to each city. In a statement Edwards said, “Last year during the pandemic, Tiverton did not receive their full stipend due to the closing of the casino, and the amount due them was not addressed in a prorated manner.” He added, “Under the current law, the casino could close for one day and then either town risks not receiving some of any of their stipends. This legislation would close that loophole. Both towns incur costs to host the casinos and as such should be compensated.”

The bill has been referred to the House Finance Committee.
