Racing Australia, the lawmaking body for the country’s thoroughbred racing industry, has passed a new law stating that any person subject to the Australian rules of racing who is suspected of placing a bet with an illegal operator can now have his or her phone and computer seized.
The law is the latest attempt by the body to combat offshore gambling sites. wagering operators.
The law applies to anyone bound by Australian racing rules, such as trainers and owners. If found in violation, their electric communication devices can be forensically imaged and they face stiff penalties for gambling with companies who don’t have licensing agreements with Australian racing states.
Racing Victoria has previously passed a similar rule, but Racing Australia’s rule broadens the powers to include every principal racing authority in the country. The laws will come into effect on August 1.
