To fill a void left when New Orleans pulled out of hosting the Super Bowl in 2024 due to the Mardi Gras timing, the Las Vegas Raiders and Las Vegas have offered to step in, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
New Orleans will get Super Bowl LIX for 2025 instead, the NFL said on October 14.
In other NFL news, this season’s Pro Bowl January 31 at Allegiant Stadium became another casualty of Covid-19. The stadium will get to be the locale of the Pro Bowl a year later.
Las Vegas and Allegiant Stadium would be a good candidate for the 2024 Super Bowl.
“It obviously provides a tremendous stage,” said Peter O’Reilly, the NFL’s executive vice president of club business and league events. While the decision, which won’t be revealed until 2021, is up to the 32 owners, Las Vegas has the attributes necessary.
“Clearly, it is an entertainment capital,” O’Reilly said. “And then the Super Bowl is the intersection of sports and entertainment and the biggest annual sporting event of the year.
The Raiders declined comment on the situation.
Should Las Vegas not get the nod for Super Bowl LVIII, the city could make a pitch for Super Bowl LX in 2026.
O’Reilly would not name other cities that might express interest in hosting Super Bowl LVIII, but a league source indicated Dallas and Miami are expected to be candidates.
