Rank Group to Close Grosvenor Casino in Leeds

The Rank Group has announced it will close one of two Grosvenor casinos (l.) in Leeds, England to concentrate on the remaining property. Grosvenor Casino Leeds Arena will shut down next month.

Landlord declined to renew lease

The Rank Group has announced the imminent closure of one of its two gaming halls in Leeds, Yorkshire County, England.

According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, the Grosvenor Casino on Merrion Way will shut down for good next month because the casino’s landlord decided not to renew the lease. The Rank Group said it would close the venue for good and focus on its other operation in Leeds, the Grosvenor Casino Westgate.

“We will be refurbishing that site over the coming months to ensure we provide an even more exciting casino experience for the people of Leeds,” said a statement from the company.

No figures have been released about the number of jobs that may be lost.

“We hope through the consultation process all the staff affected are able to secure alternative employment within the Rank Group,” said a spokesman for Leeds City Council. “Should this process result in any redundancies, we will work with partner agencies in the city to offer all the support we can in order to identify new potential employment opportunities.”

The shutdown coincides with the opening of a so-called “super-casino” at the new Victoria Gate complex. The 50,000-square-foot Victoria Gate Casino will be the third largest casino in the UK and employ more than 200 people. It will include one the biggest poker rooms in the country, 24 gaming tables, 140 slot machines and 80 electronic table games.

This the second time the Rank Group decided to close a casino in Leeds. In 2008, the company closed the Grosvenor Casino in Moortown after 40 years in business.
