Rare Poor Start for Nevada Sportsbooks

Nevada sportsbooks could not follow up last year’s big opening day of the NFL season with another one this year. Instead, the sportsbooks took a bath as nine of 12 favored teams covered the spread on their opening Sundays and only a sweep of evening games by underdogs prevented a disaster.

The NFL Football season got off to a rough start for Nevada’s sportsbooks as nine out of 12 favored teams covered the spread on the first full Sunday of football this year.

“I don’t remember a worse opening Sunday,” Westgate Superbook Director Jay Kornegay told ESPN.

Every sports-betting operation posted dreadful results as the public, which generally favors betting on favored teams, won every morning game, and the afternoon slate didn’t fare much better.

Evening games proved more beneficial for sportsbooks as the New York Giants covered as underdogs at the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night, and home underdogs the Atlanta Falcons and San Francisco 49ers covered their respective spreads and both totals went under in their Monday Night Football openers.

The opening weekend of the NFL season usually is a boon for sportsbooks, which recorded one of their best years ever last year when 10 of 13 underdogs covered.

This year proved quite different and could have been devastating is the favored teams covered in the Sunday night and Monday night games.
