Report: New Jersey Will Take Sports Betting Case to U.S. Supreme Court

ESPN reports that New Jersey State Senator Raymond Lesniak (l.) plans to appeal the ruling against the state’s sports betting law to the U.S. Supreme Court. The state’s current law was ruled in violation of a federal ban on sports betting earlier this year. The state has made several attempts to overturn the federal ban, including an earlier case that was also appealed to the Supreme Court, but the court did not elect to hear that appeal.

New Jersey State Senator Raymond Lesniak—a vocal proponent of expanding gambling in the state—has told ESPN that he expects to appeal the state’s latest failed attempt to legalize sports betting to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Lesniak told ESPN that the latest ruling against the state by Third Circuit Court of Appeals, will be appealed with a filing last week, though no other statements about an appeal have been made by New Jersey officials.

The state appealed a former ruling against its attempts to legalize sports betting to the Court, but the justices elected not to hear that appeal. The state has made several attempts to get around a federal ban on sports betting over the last few years.
