Resorts, Golden Nugget In Atlantic City Authorize Strike

With seven of the nine casinos already on board with the new UNITE HERE Local 54 contract, only Resorts and Golden Nugget remain without a contract. The 1,000 employees in the union authorized a July 30 strike.

Members of UNITE HERE Local 54 representing seven Atlantic City casinos agreed to new contracts earlier in July. The seven include Borgata, Caesars, Harrah’s, Hard Rock and Tropicana. Ocean and Bally’s will adopt the same contract retroactive to June 1.

The ratification leaves two casinos without a new pact: Resorts Casino Hotel and Golden Nugget. About 1,000 employees at the two casinos are part of the union, according to CBS. The union says 97 percent of the affected workers authorized a strike, set for July 30.

“We just want what workers at the other casinos in the city are getting,” J Eger, a bartender at Golden Nugget casino, said in a statement. “We’re not asking for any more or any less than that.”

What workers want are pay increases, improved workload standards and more job protections.
