The town board of Newburgh, New York last week approved an agreement between Monticello Raceway Management and Resorts World Hudson Valley that would not only allow video lottery terminals in stores and shopping centers, but also give Resorts World permission to place its electronic gaming casino in the Newburgh Mall.
Within its proposal to the Town of Newburgh Planning Board, Resorts World Catskills plans to spend $32 million on the new 90,000-square-foot gaming and entertainment project to feature 1,300 electronic slots.
Although no formal opening date has been confirmed, Genting Malaysia, parent company of Resorts World Catskills, is relieved to find a home for an electronic gaming parlor after spending two years searching for a location.
Newburgh Town Supervisor Gil Piaquadio is equally excited, as the 388,000-square-foot Newburgh Mall is “struggling to attract occupants…this will be the first and only such licensed facility in Newburgh and in Orange County.”
Development efforts promise to bring two hundred construction jobs with even more temporary jobs in preparation for opening. Upon completion, Resort World Hudson Valley’s video gaming casino is expected to fill 215 positions, of which to include Hotel Trade Council Union jobs averaging $72,000 annual salary.
“That would mean a total of almost $15.5 million in annual wages here in the town of Newburgh,” said Megan Taylor, Resorts World vice president for government affairs, during the negotiations.
