Rhode Island Legislature Faces Gaming Issues

Rhode Island, whose third largest source of income is its two casinos, is facing a $60 million deficit this year. It may look at increasing how much it gets from its casinos and could allow state-operated internet gaming.

A looming deficit may force Rhode Island lawmakers to consider increasing the amount of money it gets from its two casinos and the possibility of allowing state-operated internet gaming.

Lawmakers are returning back to work with a flurry of activities that will also include looking at upping the money the state gets from gaming.

The state is facing a $60 million deficit this year and $204 million the following year. It hasn’t had to deal with a similar shortfall since 2010, during the Great Recession. Some blame a tax cut that was approved last year.
