Tiverton Casino was closed for three months, and although it has started to reopen, the town of Tiverton, Rhode Island is not getting the money that the casino normally pays the town out of its profits.

The city is reworking its budget and a making new tax levy to make up for the loss of the money. It also doesn’t plan to include casino revenue for the upcoming fiscal year because of the uncertainty of whether there will be a second wave of the coronavirus that might cause Twin River Tiverton Casino Hotel to cease operations again.

The casino normally pays the city $3.1 million. It had only been paid $1.2 million in mid-March when the pandemic caused both casinos in the state to close.

The town thought that it was guaranteed the money from the state if the casino closed, but later found out that wasn’t true.

Each year in May the voters of Tiverton vote on the new city budget in a referendum. This year the town council did not want to do that without knowing how much money it will get from the state for the next fiscal year.
