Romania Open to Foreign Operators

The Romanian parliament has approved legislation that would open the country’s gaming market to international operators. The measure still must be weighed by the constitutional court and the Romanian president.

Open to EU and other countries

Romania appears poised to permit foreign casino operators to invest in and help develop its national gaming industry, according to a report on Pokernews.com.

According to the site, “Romania’s new gambling law will lead to an overhaul of the licensing system in force today.” Authorities hope the new structure could yield at least €100 million (US$114 million) in new revenues per year. The plan, which would no longer require operators to be legally based in Romania, could also help to thwart unlicensed operators.

Operators based in any country in the European Union as well as Switzerland, Norway, Liechtenstein, and Iceland could apply for a license. They would be asked to keep duplicate servers in Romania for easy access by regulators.
