Russia Temporarily Blocks Google Over Gambling Link

Russia’s telecom regulator temporarily blocked access to Google’s search engine last month due to links to a banned online gambling domain. The links were to Russian bookmaker Fonbet, a blacklisted site.

Russian internet users temporarily lost access to the Google.ru domain after Russian regulators detected a link on one of the search engine’s pages containing a redirect to an online gambling domain associated with Russian bookmaker Fonbet.

The site is on a blacklist monitored by Russia’s telecommunications regulator Roskomnadzor. The regulator notified Google about the redirect last year, but the search engine apparently took no action on removing the redirect, according to a report at CalvinAyre.com. The regulator then moved to block thee site.

Several Russian ISPs have automated their blocking systems which resulted in “access limited” warnings when trying to load Google.ru.

After receiving complaints, Google removed the offending redirect and service was restored.
