Sahara First on the Vegas Strip to Dump Resort Fees

Times being what they are, operators on the Las Vegas Strip are having to take a hard look at their value proposition. First to go was paid parking. Resort fees could be next, as the Sahara (l.) has temporarily suspended them.

Sahara First on the Vegas Strip to Dump Resort Fees

Speculation that resort fees may be going the way of paid parking on the Las Vegas Strip gained momentum last week with the news that the Sahara was scrapping the controversial charges, at least for now.

Prior to reopening last Thursday, the North Strip resort said any hotel reservations placed between that day and June 30 will not include the fees, which have become a mainstay on the Strip and ostensibly cover the costs of amenities such as wi-fi and pool and fitness center access.

Normally, the fees are not included in the cost of rooms booked online. For that reason they’ve grown into a considerable source of consumer annoyance nationwide, even sparking a movement in Congress to force hotels to disclose them at the time of booking.

The Sahara said its no-fee promotion, titled “For the Love of Vegas,” will remain in effect for its 1,620 rooms through May 31, 2021.

“We know how much everyone has missed traveling, and we’ve missed entertaining guests at our resort,” General Manager Paul Hobson said. “Removing the resort fee for our first promotion is our way of welcoming guests back to the city and thanking them for their patronage.”
