Saipan Senate Amends Casino Legislation

Saipan’s Senate has amended casino legislation for the island and removed confidentiality clauses for information from Best Sunshine, the island’s exclusive licensee. It then adopted a revised bill that now goes to Saipan’s House of Representatives.

The Saipan Senate recalled a casino bill and then adopted a revised bill removing confidentiality clauses from the bill.

According to Yogonet.com, the proposed legislation would have kept all proceedings, records and commissions documents involving Best Sunshine—the island’s sole casino licensee—confidential and unavailable to the public.

The updated version of the bill that eliminates the secrecy of Best Sunshine operations and enable the Commonwealth Lottery Commission to have access to such documents. It also addressed concerns of regulators to have their own legal counsel. All nine members of the Senate voted to recall and then pass the updated bill.
