The La Jolla Band of Luiseño Indians of San Diego County plans a small casino with about 75 slot machines to serve customers along State Route 76 who are on their way to the desert.
The 700-member tribe has no ambitions of taking on its neighboring casinos such as Harrah’s Southern California Resort, Pala Casino & Resort or Valley View Casino, in a mano-a-mano contest, but to fill a niche by offering very cheap gas and groceries, and the chance to drop a quarter or two in a slot machine before hitting the road.
The tribe also operates a zipline and RV park along with camping on the 10,000 acre reservation.
La Jolla CEO Skye McMichael told The Roadrunner “We see this as another tribal enterprise adding to our economic potential. It’s not going to be a huge facility, but kind of a place where you can stop and fill up at a gas station that has some of the lowest prices around and do a little gambling. We’re going to have a community feeling.”
