SEC Might Discuss Gambling

The Southeastern Conference, which oversees collegiate sports in a large part of the U.S. is likely to discuss the impact of the recent U.S. Supreme Court lifting of the ban on sports betting. The conference will meet soon in Destin, Florida.

Speculation is rampant that the spring SEC (Southeastern Conference) meetings may include a discussion of the recent Supreme Court ruling that lifted the ban on sports betting, without replacing the law with anything.

The four-day conference meeting will happen in Destin, Florida.

On the likely agenda are: alcohol sales at SEC stadiums, and whether the prohibition on them should be lifted; free agency within the league; sports betting.

Now that the ban has been lifted, it is legal if states allow it. Several states are already contemplating adopting laws of their own. That would include the thorny question of whether sports gaming would include university sports.

When West Virginia passed a sports betting bill, West Virginia University athletic director Shane Lyons decided to hire more compliance department staffers. He told wvnews.com “We’re going to have to step our game up.”
