September Trial Date for Former Suncity Head Alvin Chau

Former Macau gaming king Alvin Chau is scheduled to make his first court appearance September 2 on charges that he illegally promoted gambling on the Chinese mainland, took part in money laundering and associated with organized criminal elements.

Arrested in November 2021, Chau was indicted in May and has been held in Macau’s Coloane Prison ever since.

A TDM Radio Macau report said the amount of money involved in alleged illegal betting activities is more than HK$800 billion (US$102 billion). The former Suncity CEO will be tried alongside 20 others implicated in the scheme.

On the heels of Chau’s arrest, in December, Suncity officially closed its junket business and Chau stepped down as chairman of Suncity Group, which holds significant interests in integrated resort developments in Vietnam, Russia and the Philippines.
