Singapore Telecommunications will stage a live eSports event in partnership with associated operators from five Asia-Pacific countries this October.
The company hopes the event will help spur growth in the eSports industry as a new source of revenue and demand for data transmission among a younger generation of customers.
The PVP eSports Championship, Singtel’s first esports event, will gather top amateur gamers from Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Australia and India, the company said in a press release. The event will feature both mobile and PC games, such as “Arena of Valor,” “Hearthstone” and “Dota 2.” Professional gamers from the U.S. , Europe and China, will also be invited to play.
“Telcos have every right and the assets, to play in the growing gaming ecosystem and we want to engage the largely millennial consumers across our regional footprint,” said Arthur Lang, CEO of International at Singtel, in a news release.
The championship is being held in partnership with group companies Advanced Info Service of Thailand, Indonesia’s Telekomunikasi Selular, Globe Telecom of the Philippines and India’s Bharti Airtel, in which Singtel has stakes ranging from 21 to 47 percent as well as its wholly owned Australian subsidiary Optus.
The action will be broadcast live through Singtel’s mobile video streaming platform Hooq and similar services run by associate companies, the release said.
