SkyCity Adelaide Ordered to Appoint Expert to Revise AML Standards

The Honourable Brian Martin AO KC, the commissioner in charge of reviewing the suitability of Adelaide’s lone casino licensee, SkyCity Adelaide, has directed the company to appoint a third-party monitor to help oversee and revise its anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing (AML/CTF) initiatives.

According to the company, Martin will personally oversee and approve the appointment of the monitor, who will be tasked with reviewing, amending and implementing the new and enhanced AML/CTF protocols and presenting the results back to Martin.

Per Inside Asian Gaming, the company was told that the new monitor is needed in order to ensure “independent perspective of SkyCity Adelaide’s AML/CTF and host responsibility enhancement programmes and an additional layer of assurance.”

The inquiry from Martin was first initiated in July 2022 by the state’s Consumer and Business Services division, in response to a litany of other daming inquiries across the country from fellow operators Star Entertainment and Crown Resorts.

The country’s federal financial watchdog, AUSTRAC, also filed civil suits against all three companies in December of last year, but SkyCity’s case has not yet been resolved. Martin officially paused his review back in February until the AUSTRAC case was finalized.

SkyCity has vowed to continue cooperating with Martin as well as Consumer and Business Services for documentation and information requests.
