Some Fans Allowed at New Mexico Track

For the first time since Ruidoso Downs Race Track and Casino in Southeastern New Mexico shut its doors on March 15 fans are being allowed at the racetrack.

Casinos at the state’s racinos remain closed.

The track opened on a limited basis on Memorial Day with racing but no spectators. Now some fans will be allowed to attend and others will be able watch simulcast races at Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino.

The Ruidoso jockey and turf clubs will be open to owners and season ticket holders with limited seating capacity of 50 percent. There will be a few tellers and tote machines.

Jeff True, Ruidoso Downs Race Track and Casino Vice President and General Manager commented, “We’ve had a good response from owners and those who have a spot in the Jockey Club.” He added, “I think we’ll see a better crowd coming up for the Fourth of July weekend. We’re hopeful moving forward.”

Trials for the Rainbow Futurity, Rainbow Derby and Rainbow Oaks will be held in the days leading up to that weekend.

Sunland Park will operate at 50 percent on Friday, Saturday and Sunday to begin and the following week will open from Thursday-Sunday.

Fans must wear masks and no smoking will be allowed. Tony Chavez, marketing manager for Sunland Park, said there is plenty of space for social distancing, including at the turf club area.
