Sometimes Smaller is Better

Small resort casinos that offer lots of amenities without having to leave are proving to be an attractive alternative to big Las Vegas convention centers for some smaller groups.

A featured article in Successful Meetings last week pointed out that sometimes casinos that are not in Las Vegas work better for some groups.

They don’t have to be small casinos, either. The author, Deanna Ting, notes that Pechanga Resort Casino in Riverside County, California can be a better value than a Las Vegas getaway.

The Deadwood Gaming Resort in South Dakota attracts a small convention of the South Dakota Petroleum and Propane Marketers Association each year.

The Gold Strike Casino Resort in Tunica, Mississippi each year hosts a small annual conference of Application Data Systems Incorporated.

According to Ting, what they all have in common is that they are staying at a resort that they don’t have to leave during the course of the meeting. Such resorts have everything they need.

One such participant says, “It has everything for everybody, and our group really likes it. It’s not like Vegas or Atlantic City, but that’s the point. It’s very quaint, personal, and accommodating. This is a destination resort — that’s why they built The Lodge at Deadwood on this beautiful hill with that view of the mountains. People will come here and not want to leave.”
