South Dakota Governor Expected To Sign Games Bill

A bill allowing keno, craps and roulette at Deadwood casinos is expected to be signed by South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard (l.), with the games becoming available in July. Proponents of the measure said the new games will help Deadwood casinos compete against Colorado and Iowa.

South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard is expected to sign a bill that will allow keno, roulette and craps at area casinos. Previously passed by the state Senate, the House recently voted 46-22 to approve the measure. “It’s the start of a new era in Deadwood. We’ve got three games that I think are going to make Deadwood even more famous than it was before. We’ll be ready. I think we’re going to have a huge year,” said Deadwood Mayor Chuck Turbiville. The games are expected to be available in July.

In November 57 percent of voters approved Constitutional Amendment Q, which gave the legislature the authority to implement the new games. Supporters said the new games will help Deadwood compete with casinos in Colorado and Iowa.

Mike Rodman, executive director of the Deadwood Gaming Association, said proponents are “elated” that they won the battle for the new games. Added Mike Gustafson, managing partner at the Deadwood Mountain Grand, “I’m very glad the legislature sees fit to agree with the voters of South Dakota.” Gustafson stated six or seven Deadwood properties have the floor space to put in craps and roulette tables. Caleb Arceneaux, chief executive officer at Liv Hospitality, which manages Cadillac Jack’s Gaming Resort and Tin Lizzie Gaming Resort, craps and roulette will be offered in both properties. He noted the new games will enhance what Deadwood can offer and help it compete.
