Spain Begins Consultation on Updating Gambling Data

The Spanish Directorate General of Gaming (DGOJ) has begun public consultations on updating the “information monitoring system” for Spanish gambling.

The Directorate wants to obtain feedback on the DGOJ’s goal of overhauling the data it collects.

The data is needed in order to bring the Directorate in line with the new “Royal Decree on Responsible Gaming Environments” issued in March that is intended to encourage safer gaming environments and advertising. This will involve a more robust system of information monitoring.

Under this new system the Directorate will keep records and maintain “risk profiles” on customers under 25. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs is asking for tighter monitoring of the age ground 18-25.

This is also part of an effort to bring gaming markets into harmony for all jurisdictions and autonomous communities in the country. There are 17 such autonomous regions, such as Aragon, Andalusia and Catalonia. Another focus is on making it easy for gamblers to self-exclude. The reforms are planned to be in place by 2024. The government hopes to implement some of the strictest laws in Europe protecting minors and other vulnerable persons.
