Spain’s presidential ministry has set up a nationwide commission to combat match-fixing in sports competitions and fraud in betting.
The body, made up of representatives of the Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling, the National Police, the Civil Guard and the Higher Sports Council, will begin by developing an early-warning system to detect irregularities.
“Corruption linked to the manipulation of sports competitions and betting-related fraud are two of the greatest threats to sport and horse racing, as it undermines each sport’s core values and ruins the experience for fans and spectators,” said the ministry in a statement.
The commission was launched following the May arrests of Spanish football players who allegedly took part in match-fixing and were said to be part of a criminal organization.
