Spain’s gambling regulator has released draft regulations that would expand existing rules to the national lottery. Among the new rules are strict restrictions that ban TV and radio ads except for four hours in the early morning and which ban any promotional bonuses.

Spain Extends Ad Restrictions to Lottery

The Spanish Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ) has released draft regulations that would expand gambling ad rules to the national lottery, as reported by iGaming Business.

This includes restricting TV and radio ads to between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. and banning any promotional bonuses. The purpose of these restrictions, said the directorate, is to protect consumers.

The proposed rules are contained in a resolution that subjects brokers and lottery operators to strict restrictions and specifications on marketing and advertising that had previously been spelled out in the Law 13/2011 of 27 May and the subsequent Royal Decree 958/November 3, 2020, known as the Spanish Gambling Act.

The regulations require that lottery websites must verify age through national databases. They must warn minors that they cannot be on the website or buy lottery products and that the website carry an official government seal to prove that it is a legitimate site and not an unlicensed site.

Lottery brokers must comply with the same requirements, including marketing requirements and transparency of sales activity.
