Spain May Allow Loot Boxes

Spain is considering whether to “modify the Gaming Law” to allow loot boxes under gaming regulations.

At the direction of Mikel Arana, head of the General Directorate for the Regulation of Gambling, the Spanish Ministry of Consumers Affairs is doing a public consultation to seek guidance on how to properly include loot boxes in the updated law.

Arana was urged to review loot boxes by the country’s “Commission on Addiction” and “Responsible Gaming Advisory Council.”

According to the Ministry: “The loot box phenomenon can have potentially dangerous effects on certain groups of players,” adding “The evident connection of some random reward mechanisms with gambling also brings with it the negative consequences traditionally associated with the latter, which affect, in particular, certain vulnerable groups.”

Other members of the EU are launching consultations on loot box laws because there is a perceived lack of transparency about regulations related to them.
