Spain’s Online Revenue Grows

Online gambling revenue grew by 10 percent in Spain for the first three months of 2014. The major increase came in sports wagering while online poker revenue was down.

Figures released by Spanish gaming regulators show that online gambling revenue for the first quarter of 2104 was at million, up 10 percent from 2013.

Sports-betting revenue saw the largest increase rising 23 percent to 37.3 million euros, representing 56 percent of all online wagers. Poker revenue slipped 5 percent to $ 23 million, while the casino games were flat.

The decrease in poker revenue remains troubling. The iPoker network’s Eurojuegostar.es has announced it will close its Spanish poker operation. It is the latest in a string of operators—including iPoker’s Poker770—to shut down in Spain.

The country’s high online revenue taxes and regulations, however, are also seen as a reason for the closings.
