Spanish Online Gambling Rises

Online gambling revenue rose in Spain for the latest quarter, but is still off 2012 figures. Meanwhile, Paddy Power has said it is not interested in the Spanish market and Ladbrokes is delaying migrating its Spanish players to its Sportium brand.

Spain’s online gambling market rebounded in the last quarter of 2013 showing revenue growth, but still fell short of 2012’s figures.

Figures released by the Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego show overall revenue of €59.9m in the quarter up 15.6 percent over the third quarter of 2013. The figure is still off 2.5 percent than the fourth quarter of 2012.

Total player registration in Spain rose 585,000  to 1.6 million for all of 2013.

Meanwhile, Peter O’Donovan, head of online operations for Paddy Power says Spain “doesn’t fit into” the company’s strategic vision.

O’Donovan told eGaming Review that Paddy’s strategy was to study “attractive markets of significant size and invest in them heavily,” but their Spanish research suggested the “overall market size and the local competitive dynamic” made the country “not an opportunity we’re going for

Also, Ladbrokes has delayed plans to migrate its Spanish players from the LBapuestas brand to the new Sportium site. The Sportium joint venture with Spanish operator Cirsa soft-launched its site in December, two months behind schedule.
