Sportingbet in Violation of UK Law?

UK online sportsbook Sportingbet allegedly continued to take Irish bets even after the introduction of new legislation requiring it to be licensed in the Irish Republic, according to reports. The alleged oversight involved fewer than 200 players.

The UK sportsbook Sportingbet continued to take bets from the Irish Republic after August 1, when new legislation kicked in that requires it to be licensed in the country. According to the Irish Post, it was “an apparent oversight” by the bookmaker and involved less than 200 of 20,000 legacy Irish players on its books.

“We have been made aware of a situation in our Irish operations and we are looking into the matter,” said a spokesman for the company. “Our early understanding is that a handful of Irish customers were affected.” In an email to customers, Sportingbet wrote, “Any non-settled bets will be voided and the funds returned to your Sportingbet account.” Players who won during the three-week period may retain their winnings.
