Sports Betting Debuts at Four Deadwood Casinos

Four casinos in Deadwood, South Dakota opened sportsbooks on September 9. The venues are Tin Lizzie, Cadillac Jack’s, Gold Dust and Mustang Sally’s. For now, wagers can be placed with a teller at a window

or at a digital kiosk. In the near future, bets can be placed on a phone app as long as the bettor is on the premises.

The day before the openings, the South Dakota Commission on Gaming issued its final ruling which sporting events gamblers can bet on, including Olympic events and professional and college sports.

Deadwood Gaming Association Executive Director Mike Rodman said, “We’re very pleased that we got to this point. And it’s been a long haul getting there.”

Rodman noted the effort to bring legalized sports gambling to Deadwood started several years ago. In 2019, the Deadwood Gaming Commission urged state lawmakers to legalize it, but the legislation failed by three votes. In 2020, South Dakota voters passed a sports gambling referendum with 58 percent approval. Sports betting finally was officially legalized in 2021.
