Sports Betting Increases in France

Sports betting made gains in the third quarter in the French online market while online poker and online horseracing betting continued to show declines. Online sports revenue was up 40 percent to €87m.

Online sports betting revenue was up 40 percent in the French online market for the third quarter of 2016 according to French gaming regulators.

Licensed online sports betting operators saw a betting turnover of €448m in the three months ending September 30. That’s a 50 percent increase over the same period last year. For the quarter, online sports revenue was up 40 percent to €87m.

The wagering was helped by the Euro 2016 football tournament, generating a turnover of €39m, while the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil generated wagers amounting to €34m

The two events accounted for 16 percent of overall betting in the third quarter. Most betting took place on football, which accounted for 58 percent of betting stakes. Tennis claimed 27 percent of the market.

Online poker revenue slipped 3 percent in the third quarter in France. Online horserace wagering also decline with turnover falling 11 percent to €213m while horse racing revenue was down 10 percent to €54m.
