Sports Betting Not Dead in Massachusetts

On June 17, the Massachusetts Legislature’s Committee on Economic Development and Emerging Technologies revisited the legalization of sports betting in the Bay State, almost exactly two years after it first held hearings on the proposal.

The hearing looked at 20 bills related to sports betting. In 2019 the legislature’s Economic Development Committee held two days of testimony. That year the House passed a sports betting element as part of an economic development bill, but the Senate didn’t show similar interest.

Governor Charlie Baker is a strong proponent of sports betting, and for the last two years has included $35 million in revenue from it in his annual budget.
