State Legislators Organization in U.S. Calls for Stronger Taiwan Ties

The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) is calling for the U.S. to pass the Taiwan Travel Act and to forge closer ties with the island nation. It passed a resolution last month calling for the U.S. to “take advantage of the opportunities afforded by this new policy and schedule visits between high-level U.S. officials and their Taiwanese counterparts.

The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) at its annual meeting October 23 passed a resolution calling for stronger ties with Taiwan and supporting the Taiwan Travel Act. ALEC is an organization of state legislators and business representatives who write model bills on a variety of issues. About 200 of its model bills become law annually.

The resolution will be sent to all U.S. governors, the Secretary of Defense and the House Committee on Foreign Affairs as well as to similar organizations in Taiwan.

The resolution calls on the U.S. administration to “take advantage of the opportunities afforded by this new policy and schedule visits between high-level U.S. officials and their Taiwanese counterparts without delay to underscore the bilateral openness that this policy shift makes possible.”
