Stockbridge-Munsee Still Eying New York

A band of Wisconsin Indians is making progress in its plan to build an off-reservation casino―way off. The Stockbridge Munsee want to develop a property in New York State.

No decision yet on trust lands

The Stockbridge Munsee Band of Mohican Indians, based in Wisconsin, continues to pursue its ambitious goal to build a casino in New York State.

According to Indianz.com, the Bureau of Indian Affairs has completed an environmental impact study on a 350,000 square-foot gaming facility in the Catskill Mountains. But a final decision is not expected soon on the tribe’s land-into-trust application for a 330-acre site in the region.

Documents relating to the matter say the Department of the Interior “must further evaluate all of the criteria” before it rules on the Catskills site or an alternative.

In 2008, the Bush administration rejected the proposal because the site was too far away from the reservation. That policy was rescinded under the Obama administration.
