Suffolk OTB Dusts off Medford Casino Proposal

Suffolk OTB is looking at 32 acres in Suffolk County, New York that it has been trying to sell for two years in a new light. It is proposing to build a 1,000 terminal video lottery casino in the city of Medford.

Suffolk County Regional Off-Track Betting Corp. in New York State is taking a new look at its old plans to build a video lottery casino or sports betting facility in Medford where it first proposed a casino two years ago.

OTB President Phil Nolan made the announcement, noting that his plans would require legislation from the state to make it a reality. OTB has been looking for a buyer for the 32 acres just off the Long Island Expressway—without success.

Two years ago, the company put the land on the market after finding an alternate site for a 1,000 terminal video lottery parlor at what is now Jake’s 58 Hotel & Casino in Islandia.

Interviewed by Newsday, Nolan said, “The only thing we can do with the property, other than to build on it, is to sell it to someone, and that opportunity has never come our way. We discussed it and we decided to keep our eyes and ears open.” He would like to be able to expand to 2,000 VLTs, if state law can be changed.

There are no such bills pending in the legislature.
