Sun Int’l. Shelves S. Africa Plan

Emfuleni Resorts Ltd. has deep-sixed its plan to develop a casino complex in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. The decision came after local regulators did not extend the area’s casino license for an additional 20 years.

8,500 potential jobs vanish

Casino developer Emfuleni Resorts Ltd. has cancelled its plans to build a mixed-use development and casino in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, according to reports. Emfuleni, based in the beachfront community of Summerstrand, South Africa, is a unit of Sun International Ltd.

Sun International made the call after the Eastern Cape Gambling and Betting Board declined to extend the Boardwalk’s current casino license, reported the website Yogonet.com. Though the current 15-year term does not expire for nine years, the developer wanted an additional 20 years to justify its investment, according to InterGame.com.

The development would have created 8,500 jobs and included a retail district, entertainment venue, bowling alley and movieplex, among other attractions. The proposed US$88.5 million (€80 million) development would have been the city’s largest single investment in hospitality and tourism.
