Suncity Plans Expansion Into Branded Hotels

As part of an aggressive strategy to diversify beyond VIP gaming in Macau, Suncity is looking to capitalize on investments in resort casinos cross Asia with its own hotels.

Suncity Plans Expansion Into Branded Hotels

Suncity Group, best-known as the largest operator of VIP gaming rooms in Macau, is launching its own hotel brand to coincide with the company’s investment in a US$1 billion casino hotel under development in Manila.

Macau-based industry magazine Inside Asian Gaming said the as-yet unnamed brand will debut at Westside City Resorts World, which is slated to open in late 2023 in the Philippine capital’s Entertainment City casino district.

Hong Kong-based Suncity bought a 51 percent stake in the project in 2019 as part of a three-way agreement with Philippine construction giant Megaworld Corp. and Travellers International Hotel Group, operator of Resorts World Manila, one of the city’s premier casino hotels.

As currently envisioned, Westside will offer 400 gaming tables and 1,200 slot machines. The Suncity hotel will feature 400 rooms and suites.

The investment is part of wide-ranging plans on Suncity’s part to

diversify away from reliance on the VIP junket business in Macau. These include controlling stakes in a resort casino in Vietnam, Hoiana, which recently held a soft opening in a popular vacation spot near Da Nang on the South China Sea coast, and a China-facing casino hotel, Tigre de Cristal, near Vladivostok, Russia.

The company also has moved into financing film and television productions, live concerts and arts-related projects, principally in Macau and China, through a subsidiary known as Sun Entertainment Culture.
