In January 2021, $13.4 million in cash disappeared from a safe at Jeju’s Landing Casino in South Korea. Authorities were stumped and the case went cold, but the investigation was recently reopened after police arrested a suspect as he tried to board a plane in Dubai.
According to Korean news outlet Munhwa, “Mr. A,” as he’s identified, had hoped to return to Incheon International Airport.
“Mr A., who had been on a red wanted notice from Interpol, will be repatriated to Jeju to investigate the circumstances of the incident,” a police official said. An accomplice, identified as Mr. B, had escaped out of the country bringing Interpol into the investigation, according to Live Casino Direct.
Authorities located most of the stolen money last year, with $6.5 million found stored in a separate safe at Landing Casino, $3.7 million discovered at the suspect’s home. Another $759,000 was thought to have gone overseas.
The recovered money resides in a Jeju bank with its fate unknown. According to South Korean law, property coming from a crime is subject to confiscation. If it is returned, it won’t be until after prosecution of the accused.
