Despite double digit growth in the first half of 2017 for Sweden’s state-owned online gambling operator Svenska Spel, figures released by Swedish regulators show international sites still drew more revenue than the Swedish operator.
According to figures from regulator Lotteriinspektionen, the country’s overall gaming market saw turnover of slightly more than SEK 11b (US $1.38b) in the six months ending June 30, a 3 percent increase over 2016.
Svenska Spel reported its total turnover falling 2 percent to SEK 4.3b, as online gambling gains of SEK 1 billion, an increase of 12 percent, could not offset land-based declines which fell five percent to (SEK 3.3 billion.
Non-Swedish actors saw their Swedish market turnover jump 17 percent to SEK 2.65 billion, according to an analysis at calvynayre.com. The sum generated by these international sites represents nearly one-quarter of the overall Swedish market.
The ATG horseracing monopoly reported total turnover up 3 percent to just under SEK 2 billion. The state’s lottery operators reported mixed results, with the Postcode Lottery’s sales slipping 1 percent to SEK 1.2 billion, People Games down 5 percent to SEK 273 million, IOGT-NTO off 2 percent to SEK 149 million while the SAP/SSU rose 2 percent to SEK 109 million, the website reported.
