Sweden’s National Audit Office has announced that it plans to review the effectiveness of the gambling regulator Spelinspektionen, iGaming Business reported August 21.
The announced audit follows the changes to the gambling market that followed the introduction of new regulations on July 1, 2023. The regulations gave the regulator new enforcement powers, created supplier licenses and required casinos to cooperate with the authorities on crimes related to gambling.
The office said the goal of the new policy is to develop a safe market that can raise money for charity while minimizing customer harm and activities such as money laundering.
The audit will determine if Spelinspektionen is achieving those goals. It will employ international auditing standards and may use methods such as interviews and document studies, data analysis and statistical compilations.
Earlier this summer the country’s Online Gaming Industry Association (BOS) reported that 77 percent of Sweden’s consumers use regulated, legal casino offerings. The goal is 90 percent.
