Sweden Warns of Self-Exclusion Rules

The new Swedish gaming authority Spelinspektionen has stepped into its role with heavy footsteps and a warning to online operators that strict adherence to the law on self-exclusion will be strongly enforced, including cancelling licenses if necessary.

The new regulations were released last year and implemented at the turn of the New Year. They mandate sharp penalties for disregarding Spelpaus (game-break) a mandatory requirement.

The authority was embarrassed when news reports reported that one tenth of the existing operators had failed to include information about self-exclusion. Spelinspektionen’s announcement creates a “red line” that if violated will be met with harsh measures, including suspensions and termination of licenses.

To ensure enforcement the authority has expanded its staff to 50 full-time employees
