Swedish Gaming Association Urges Breakup of State Monopoly

Branschföreningen för Onlinespel (BOS) the Swedish gaming trade association, is urging the new minister for financial markets, Niklas Wykman, to break up the state-backed gaming monopoly Svenska Spel.

The appointment followed an election where the government coalition was replaced by a coalition headed by the Moderate Party.

Besides breaking up Svenska Spel, BOS is calling on the new government not to be hostile toward the gaming industry and to relax Sweden’s restrictions on bonuses.

BOS CEO Gustaf Hoffstedt commented, “We look forward to having a discussion with Niklas Wykman about how gambling policy can best be developed in Sweden.” It will convey three messages: the need to protect licensed companies from unlicensed ones, to concentrate on making laws about gaming rather than being a gambling company itself, and finally “to highlight the gambling industry’s important business and political significance for Sweden and Europe.”

Breaking up Svenska Spel would coincide with previous calls by the Moderate Party.
