Swedish Lottery Confirms Expansion Rumors

Svenska Spel, the Swedish national lottery, will offer expanded online casino games beyond its current bingo, poker, lotteries and sports betting. The lottery hopes to attract new players, which will generate more funds to help problem gamblers.

Lennart Käll, chief executive officer of Svenska Spel, the Swedish national state-owned lottery, said rumors that the lottery will expand into traditional online casino games are true. Currently the lottery offers limited online games including bingo, poker, lotteries and sports betting.

Käll stated, “Svenska Spel offers nothing but a safe gambling environment. This environment is operated in such a way that they can help those visitors to their site that may have a gambling problem.” The Swedish gambling regulator, Lotteriinspektionen, recently issued a report that 20 percent of the country’s problem gamblers play on other websites due to Svenska Spel’s currently limited offerings. Käll added by attracting more players with the new games, Svenska Spel will be able to help more problem gambler and also to protect them under a safe and controlled gambling environment.

In 2014, Svenska Spel became the first operator to offer Playscan 4.1, a scientifically proven method that detects and prevents risky gambling by providing players with individual risk analysis notifications every week. If a player’s risk level increases, he or she is offered specialized tools to take back control.
