The Swedish Parliament has approved changes to the country’s gambling laws that revamps licensing and consumers protections. Casino operators would face a $49,500 licensing fee and about $80,000 to also include online gambling. Swedish regulators will begin accepting applications for licenses in August.

Sweden’s parliament has approved changes to the country’s gambling laws that set new licenses and fees as well as protections for problem gamblers and rules for cooperation with other jurisdictions.

Under the new rules, casino operators will have to pay SEK400,000 (US$45,900) for a license and companies that want to offer both online gambling and betting will pay SEK700,000 (US$80,500). The country plans to begin accepting applications for licenses August 1.

The bill has also been approved by Sweden’s Committee on Cultural Affairs. However, the European Commission is still reviewing the changes and the Swedish Gambling Authority may also opt to introduce other new rules and regulations, according to local reports.
