Taiwan Arrests 33 in Online Gaming Raids

Taiwan’s Criminal Investigation Bureau recently raided online gaming operations in Taichung, arresting 33 suspects and seizing computers, cell phones, China UnionPay cards and more than $US16,000 in cash.

Four locations swept

The Criminal Investigation Bureau on the island of Taiwan last week raided four locations associated with illegal online gambling. According to the website Yogonet.com, the alleged mastermind, identified only as Tseng, launched the gaming site last December by taking bets on European football matches.

Tseng reportedly employed more than a dozen people who worked in around-the-clock shifts. According to police, participating gamblers used Chinese bank accounts or the Alipay online payment system to pay for their play. For winning bets placed by Chinese, the winnings were transferred to bank or Alipay accounts designated by the customers.

The operation also provided 24-7 online consultation services and recruited people to join through text messages, communication software and the internet.
