Tasmanian Casino Operator Fights to Keep Monopoly

The Federal Group, which operates casinos in the Australian state of Tasmania, is fighting legislation that would take away its monopoly on slot machines.

The bill in question would let pubs and clubs to offer slots, which most Australian states currently allow. The law, if passed would take effect July 1, 2023.

The Federal Group claims it wasn’t given enough notice of the potential change. It says an agreement between the state and the company mandates at least four years’ notice for such a change. The company claims it could lose $25 million annually if its monopoly ends.
